Certified in Radiation Oncology
Dr. Amos was born and raised in Baton Rouge, LA. He went to college at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and finished medical school at LSU in New Orleans. Following medical school, in preparation for a life time of research and management of cancer, he completed a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. At the time, this was the largest private hospital in the United States. Here he gained extensive training and experience in the gross and microscopic characteristics of all types of cancer. He acquired a particular interest in the biologic nature, metabolism, methods of invasion, and spread of malignancies. He then completed a residency in Radiation Oncology at the University of Florida in Gainesville. He became "Chief Resident" and was honored with the "Superior Accomplishment Award" and the "Best Resident's Paper Award."
Following training, he accepted a position as Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Medical Center Clinic in West Florida Hospital in Pensacola. At the time this was one of Florida's largest and oldest medical groups which eventually grew to over 160 doctors. During his 30 years of practice here, he treated over 15,000 cancer patients acquiring extensive experience in the management of virtually every type of malignancy. He designed and developed five radiation therapy facilities in the region including the 35,000 square foot West Florida Cancer Institute in Pensacola. Dr. Amos has also practiced in Okaloosa County and at the Cancer Center of Southern Alabama in Mobile.
Because of an intense interest in academic medicine and, in particular, a love of children, Dr. Amos then accepted an appointment in the department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Here, he headed the Radiation Pediatric Oncology Section. He also gained extensive experience in Stereotactic Irradiation, Total Body Irradiation, Lung Cancer, Hodgkin's Disease, Neuroimaging, Radiosurgeries, brain tumors, pancreatic cancer, and craniospinal irradiation. He spoke, and participated in panel discussions, at an international conference on Breast Cancer in New York. He gave numerous lectures on many and varied topics about cancer management. He actively participated in front line research in the Children's Oncology Group, a national research organization.
While in private practice, Dr. Amos has published several papers in prestigious medical journals. He described a new technique he developed for the treatment of certain head and neck cancers in the journal of Medical Dosimetry. He pioneered the development of the treatment of breast cancer without mastectomy by publishing his own results in the Southern Medical Journal. This article described his personal experience with 143 breast cancer patients demonstrating outstanding results. At the time, it represented the largest published series in the southeast. Requests for copies of this article were received from all over the world including the United States, South America, Europe, the Middle East and Japan. He later published his own experience with 78 patients in the use of adjuvant irradiation in colon cancer in the Annals of Surgical Oncology and then again in the journal of Cancer. Again, requests for copies of this article were received from all over the world. The articles can be viewed at the website of the National Library of Medicine, PubMed.org, by searching under Amos EH as an author or by asking for a copy at his office. With regard to prostate cancer, Dr. Amos has written treatment guidelines for prostate volume studies and prostate seed implants. Dr. Amos has been awarded the Honor of "Fellow" of The American college of Radiology which is awarded to only 10% of all Radiation Oncologists. He is past president of the Radiation Oncology Section of the Florida Radiologic Society. He has been a long standing member of the American college of Radiology, the American College of Radiation Oncology, the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology, the Florida Radiologic Society, the American Medical Association, and the Florida Medical Society.
Dr. Amos has been listed three times among "The Best Doctors in America" by American Health, Woodward White Publishers, and Good Housekeeping Magazine.
Dr. Amos' personal interests include sculptor, drawing, and writing poetry and books. His most recent publications include "My Mother's Soul" and "An outline of the History of Western Philosophy." He has also enjoyed breeding Limousine cattle by artificial insemination. He and his wife have enjoyed pecan farming, cultivating over 2000 trees. He particularly enjoys the Colorado Mountains where he and his family hike, jeep, alpine ski, cross country ski, and snow shoe. He especially enjoys the gulf waters where he fishes and boats. He has a private pilot's license. One of his favorite hobbies is upland bird hunting. In his younger years, he enjoyed triathlons.
